What makes the song so sad is that he wrote it for his 5 year old son Conner who fell out a high rise window,to his death.When asked why he wrote the song,he said it was the only way to work through the pain of losing his son. A few days after the funeral he got a letter in the mail his son sent him hours before he died,with the words "I Love You Daddy".That's when he decided to write the song for his son,instead of drinking again.Eric had been an alcoholic and had quit when his son was born.
