Gazprom in talks to buy gas from Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan may sell its gas from the Shakh Deniz field to Gazprom. The Azeri President confirmed his countrys interest in the deal during his visit to Moscow, but didnt give final approval.

There are a few reasons Azerbaijan is cooperating with Russia on a gas deal at this moment. First, Russia demonstarted with the Georgian war that it still has tremendous power in its former Soviet territories,and that NATO can not or is not willing to do anything about it, so its a questions of security. Second, it's punishing Turkey for working with Armenia to open borders and last, it hopes that Russia will pressure Armenia to give concessions on Karabakh.
