Why exactly was this refined style of singing abandoned in favor of the gratuitous belting and endless melisma of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, etc? I'm not saying that those singers are terrible, but that the extent to which they have dominated the pop music landscape is unjustified.
