Can a spammy website affect the ranking of other sites hosted on the same server?

My SEO client is using shared hosting for one of their websites. When I checked other sites hosted on their server, I found some spammy websites. Will that affect ranking of my client's website?

Majestic SEO is better because it also gives information about the sites on your server.

So Matt says that hosting websites on the same server/IP address doesn't harm. What about links between those sites? If google treat them like sites on different servers, those link should be even powerfull ;)

I'm not sure why a porn site properly managed should be considered as spammy. Is the term "spammy" simply associated to anything unacceptable by some people. I'll say site with loads of ads from affiliates like viagra,gambling etc are considered as spammy..
