I personally think that if we found sentient life out there in the universe it would be our downfall. Not just for us, but for them too.

Well I'm not too sure about that. We are pretty smart, but sadly our brains aren't smart enough to understand the universe or how it formed. They might be intrigued about the way we socialize, our culture and how we run the planet and they probably will be able to speak human language with relative ease.

@mdennyh (This is a continuation of my previous comment, since the characters are limited) On the other hand, they might not help us at all if they only care about their race and none other.

Q: What if we never find any highly advanced alien civilization?

A:Well, sucks for us. But since we seem to manage to search and progress at the same time, I don't think its' a problem.
