This was the music chosen by Peter Hall for this nineteen seventies TV programme Akenfield. It was about rural, pre-industrial Britain when people worked in the fields from dawn till dusk, seven days a week. This music epitomises the contrast between sheer exhaustion and hot sunny summer days. The young got married in the fields, making rings from daisies. The girl would pull her new man's boots off when they got home, but both immediately fell asleep from sheer exhaustion - as they always did.
@yourforte Surely all composers of worth are communing with all the music they love in some sense, and overtly doing so didn't exactly start with Stravinsky....eg the Parody Masses of the Medieval period / the many In Nomines post Taverner....etc etc
I find it fascinating that so many composers - Grieg, Vaughan Williams, Tippet, etc - still need to 'commune' with baroque music. Well this is a beautiful piece anyway and I'm glad someone's uploaded it.

One of my favourite pieces. English composers have such a way with strings.... and NOT JUST Elgar n VW!
