@MiinaXiao Spanish is spoken in many different parts of the world. There exists South American,Mexicican,Spanish ,and the carribean dialects,and each have their own expressions,and accents unique to their country.However,it is the SAME language,Spanish.And therefore everyone is still able to understand eachother.NOT the case for Chinese.Mandarin and Cantonese are as far apart as Italian and French. Close enough at times to pick out a word here and there,but COMPLETLY different languages.

@Skepticalnature But for Chinese, we just use it to mean "Putonghua", especilly in spoken language.

@MinnaXiao Also,even though Mandarin is the official language of China,more people speak Cantonese around the world.That is because most of the first chinese people that came to Europe and North America were from Southern China or Hong Kong,and practically ALL of them spoke Cantonese.They establisehed the first chinatowns overseas,as well as introduced chinese art and theater.So we cannot disrespect this fact.Correct?

@Skepticalnature Sure. There is an exact word for "Cantonese", and if we want to mean "Cantonese", we use "Cantonese" instead of Chinese. And that doesn't mean Cantonese is not included. And i didn't disrepect the fact. You may have misunderstood me.

@MinnaXioa Are you also aware that before 2003,less than 10% of the chinese people outside of china and around the world spoke Mandarin? It is slowly starting to increase now due to China opening its doors,and chinese people seeking opportunities in different countries.However,according to the latest statistical polls,Cantonese is still the most widely spoken language outside of China.So you have to understand that by saying that Chinese=Mandarin,but that Cantonese does not,can appear a bit rude

@MiinaXiao So you are saying that for people in China who speak Mandarin,Chinese=PUTONGHUA.How­ever, Cantonese does NOT equal Chinese,and therefore you have to be specific and say CANTONESE=GONGDUNWA.Is that right? If that is the case,then you are saying that only Mandarin is Chinese and that Cantonese is not.That does not sound right to me.

@MinnaXiao Thanks once again for responding.However i don't really agree with certain things you say.We cannot use ENGLISH spoken in British/America as an example,because they are dialects of the same language.Mandarin and Cantonese are two DIFFERENT languages.It is more correct to say that there are several Mandarin dialects spoken,as in the case of Taiwan.Beijing and Taiwan speak the SAME language,MANDARIN.However,the dialect is different.Do you understand what i mean?
