For the hater of inaccurate information in me, I must point out that this is NOT from Beauty and the Beast. This is from a classical suite known as "Carnival of the Animals" (That is if translated in english, it's actually in French I believe.) The melodic line played by the flute and strings is pretty similar to the melody in the prologue to Beauty and the Beast, but this is not it. Beauty and the Beast's score is credited to Alan Menken. It's possible this was the inspiration though.

I think originally, it was scored for a glass armonica. A very cool instrument if you've never seen one. It is essentially like when you rub a wet finger around a crystal wine glass. It is set up like a piano using spinning glass cylinders with ever smaller diameters arranged as a keyboard of sorts.

Except that was a Celesta, but none the less similar.

The instrument is the PianoForte, commonly known as a piano. It's a very obscure instrument so I see why you didn't recognize it.

/snarky sarcasm

I am no musician and I don't know much about classical, so don't take my word for it, but I got the impression that it was one stroke of a washboard type instrument.

It's not in Beauty and the Beast. The music in the aforementioned scene does sound virtually identical but it's not the same. I thought the same for years and decided to check it out cause I'm a loser.
