Restorative Justice (RJ) has a strategic role in delivering effective local policing that has an immediate impact in the community, engages neighbourhoods, brings people together, allows justice to be more accessible and to be seen to be done in more relevant ways. It also provides a strong framework for partnership working.
RJ is a more flexible approach that puts those people most affected by crime at the core of dealing with its effects. It brings together victims, offenders and communities to determine a response to a particular problem. At every stage the aim is to meet the needs of the victim, repair harm, pay back damage to the community and impact offending behaviour by helping to support the offender turn away from crime. It empowers all citizens to have a voice in the justice process.
