when you need to defend yourself, you just do what seems most appropriate - the different techniques train your body to move in a powerful way through all the different possible shape variations. so you might do something that's a mix of more than one technique... I think that's possibly a different emphasis - our techniques are meant to just be examples of powerful harmonious movement. The result might be the same in other arts though, even if the rationale is different.
does knowing so many different moves hinder you when the time comes? do you feel resorting back the basics helps more in a real life situation? we practice a lot of throws in judo, but i also know the advanced throws are for advanced people, and a basic throw will work on the street. our throws steem from just a few different moves, so it is easy to stick to the basics. is your art the same.
