As it was, this was a song/poem written by Louis De Paor, who wrote the verses alternately in Irish and English. I think they chose "beat" because of the double entendre - it can be beat in the sense of striking, or a musical beat, or a pulse.

@IrelandsChild That's very interesting. I can see why they chose "beat", because it's just one syllable and fits with ... the beat of the melody. But it's too soft a word. "Beat" is lacking in passion. Better to have used "rage", do you think? (Or, better not to have translated the song in the first place, and kept the lyrics purely in Gaelic?!)

'Buile' in Irish Gaelic means frenzy, rage or madness. So "Buile mo chroí" more closely would translate to "A frenzy in my heart", instead of Beat of my heart.
That is how I would translate it at least.
