What Seligman says sounds like music to my ears in theory but it seems to me that there is a threshold of human needs which must be addressed before this will work. People are under so much stress when it comes to things like unemployment that they are often happier if they learn to not care so much. i.e. If they switch off worry, and yes, that includes worrying for others so much. Once these basic stressors, like employment, housing etc are met then there may be much greater return in altruism.
