Time to get mean and lowdown with some serious black jazz from the 1920s.
Morris is an obscure figure who played cornet in the so called "primitive style" and pretty good he was too.
He made many records for blues singers and with Clarence Williams and also a number of sides in his own name.
1927 was his last time in the studio and he vanished from the scene by 1929.
In the 1930s he was a porter at a railway station in NY.he than joined a religious cult and died a few years later.
It seems incredible that in spite of his wonderful playing he could not make even a meagre living in music, but then nor could Jonny Dodds. His talent deserves an airing and more recognition.
Here he teams up with Tricky Joe Nanton and Bob Fuller to produce a terrific version of the Louis Armstrong composition.American jazz at it's best.

  • The Zulus never produced music of this quality. It is really superb.I have never heard of the cornetist,Morris.

  • @Squarerig He was quiet and unassuming and so his personality never aroused comment. He sort of walked into a mist and never came out

  • Fabulous recording!

  • This tune's been stuck in my head......for 35 years. A jazz fanatic I knew back when had this and other 78's on cassette, but it wasn't the greatest recording (I think he placed the recorder in front of a Victrola and let 'er rip). Well, on Christmas Eve it started rattling around in my noggin again. A quick YouTube search and viola! Best. Christmas present. Ever. Thanks so much! XD

  • Haha, I can tell you do like jazz!!

    Great record, great music.

    Best cornet player EVER.
