Fakirism is totally un-Islamic. What these simple folk do is completely disaprooved by main stream Islam. If you are a Real Muslim you do not harm yourself with knives or whips(fakir) or hit or bled yourself(Shia Matam) for any reason for so ever. (Shia Muslim Imams never slap or lacerate their bodies because the religion forbids them of doing so and it is "beneath them"-attitude-, they leave those acts to the simple mindless folk).

@Assyrianmaster iranian does not equal persian. persians are a distinct ethnic group within iran, like the kurds, turks and arabs. the shah was trying to make everyone be persian, thats why the minorities in iran were all for the revolution.
