Mentalist Derren Brown does his impression of rainman by counting moving buttons on a tray in seconds.

@mtoh81 yeah I was going to say the same thing. Scale in the table with a transmitter going to him. Oftentimes people will take making a mistake to make it seem more real.
The fact that the helper has to hold the tray instead of keeping it on the table makes this quite a likely scenario.

The slap moves the buttons into one bulk to one side, the board has lines and dots on it so measurements are possible which you can clearly see at 3:13, finally its just quick calculation as well- it's a difficult trick.

Derren claims he never uses "plants". He has his own techniques for sure. Re. "slowing down time" there was a famous female pianist who claimed to be able to do this when sight-reading difficult music.
Or perhaps he begins with a guesstimate, as he seems to continue counting the buttons for a several seconds after his initial prediction. He knows the area of the tray and the size of the buttons. Surely with enough practices, he could tell at a glance 50+ from 70+...

the buttons are colored. look at the dark blue ones. its the law of average. they are well mixed. 1 blue one for every 10 buttons. so 7 blue ones is 70, then a few more than that. you can count that in a flash. then just train to work out where within 10 the buttons are. I think anyway.

Well, if it was me I would put some sort of weight sensor into the table - notice that it's easy with this kind of table, you have to check what is the weight of table after she covers the table. Do the math and voila.
