Hey everyone! I have been looking on the forums all day trying to root my phone and I finally figured it out. I decided to make a video showing how to do this process in case someone cant find what they are looking for. I will explain how to root the phone and install a custom recovery image.
*** I take no credit at discovering the actual root for the phone or for the recovery image. ***
*** Use at your own risk. Although i have not come across any one on forums who bricked their phone, there is sill a possibility that this can brick your phone. I take no responsibility if you brick your phone.**
The original instruction can be found here -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581577
Instructions:
Step 1:
Download the android sdk --- http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
The next thing we download is asroot2. Make sure you extract this to the tools folder in the Android SDK folder. -- http://www.4shared.com/file/257273246/1482ded6/asroot2.html
**Recovery Image**
Then download the recovery image if you plan on flashing that. Make sure you put this in the tools folder in the Android SDK folder. -- http://www.4shared.com/file/257274510/180ea19a/recovery-RA-heroc-v162.html
Step 2:
Make sure your phone is in USB Debugging mode.
Connect the phone to the USB port, but do not mount.
Open up the commmand prompt on your computer and make your way to the Android SDK tools folder where the file adb is located and type in:
adb push /directory_you_placed_asroot2/asroot2 /data/local/
adb shell
chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/bin
cat sh " " su (greater than sign goes in quotes, leave quotes out, youtube will not allow my to put the symbol in.. check website for this part
chmod 4755 su
*congrats, your phone is rooted*
Step 3:
Now you need to flash the recovery image. You should still see a # symbol, at this point you are going to want to type in exit and hit enter. You are going to want to do this twice to take you out of the adb shell. Once that is done, type in, and press enter:
adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img /sdcard/
Once that is done, type in adb shell . If your command prompt is a dollar sign then type in su and press enter. If it is a pound sign you are good. Then type in the following:
adb shell flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img
Once that is finished you are done. To reboot into recovery type in adb shell reboot recovery or turn off phone and turn back on holding Power and Home or hold Volume down and press power, then when press home for recovery. Another method is to download the Terminal Emulator app, and in there type su and type reboot recovery.
Thank you for watching the video, I hope this helped! Leave a comment or message me if you need help.
Hey everyone. I plan on making a video on how to root 2.1 on the Hero, and how to upgrade your recovery image. Should be up pretty soon.
