The engines are cross connected to a common gear box in the center of the wing, much like a posi-traction car differential. Thusly, if one engine should fail, both rotors will continue to have power, albeit reduced by half. This means hovering out of ground-effect wound be drastically reduced, but landing would be safe. Ground Effect is the cushion of air that increases lift as the down-wash of the rotor(s) is compressed against the ground. This begins at about 1 rotor diameter from the deck.

There's a driveshaft through the wing that connects both rotors, so one engine can still power both rotors. Wouldn't want to test it though :-)
