Liefde, bedrog, wraak en vergiffenis
Het mag dan een van de oudste, nog gedanste balletten ter wereld zijn, Giselle is nog altijd immens populair. Er gaat vrijwel geen dag voorbij of dit hoogtepunt van het romantische ballet wordt wel ergens ter wereld gedanst.
Giselle gaat over heftige emoties liefde, bedrog, wraak - maar ook over niet kunnen of mogen kiezen. Het ballet raakt aan emoties die tijdloos zijn en die ook in deze tijd in belangrijke mate ons levensgeluk of het gebrek eraan bepalen. Het verhaalt over het overwinnen van liefde, aanvankelijk in een aardse wereld en daarna in een spirituele wereld waar vergeving na de dood bestaat.
De nieuwe productie die Het Nationale Ballet uitbrengt is gebaseerd op het origineel van Jules Perrot en Jean Coralli uit 1841. Het duo Rachel Beaujean en Ricardo Bustamante baseren zich op deze oer-versie, maar creëren ook nieuwe delen en voegen nieuwe gezichtspunten toe.
Rachel Beaujean, hoofd artistieke staf van Het Nationale Ballet, danste jarenlang de rol van Myrtha in Sir Peter Wrights versie van Giselle; Ricardo Bustamante, voormalig eerste solist bij het American Ballet Theatre, danste de rol van Graaf Albrecht in Giselle. Hij deelde indertijd het podium met danslegende Carla Fracci, en had in Michail Baryshnikov een even legendarische balletmeester. Beaujean en Bustamante vinden elkaar in eenzelfde passie en opvatting over dit klassiek-romantische meesterwerk.
De decors en kostuums voor deze nieuwe productie zijn van de hand van Toer van Schayk. Hij situeert het ballet aan het einde van de achttiende eeuw, nog vóór de oorspronkelijke premièredatum.
Van Schayk ontwierp ook het toneelbeeld voor tal van andere succesproducties van Het Nationale Ballet, waaronder Notenkraker & Muizenkoning en Romeo en Julia.

Love, deception, revenge and forgiveness
It may be one of the oldest ballets still being performed in the world, but Giselle is an evergreen that enjoys enduring popularity. Hardly a day goes by without this quintessentially romantic ballet being performed somewhere in the world.
Giselle is about strong emotions love, deception, revenge but also about not being able or allowed to make choices. The ballet explores emotions that are timeless and that are just as relevant to our lives today. It deals with transcending love, initially in this terrestrial world then in the spiritual world, where forgiveness after death is possible.
The Dutch National Ballets new production is based on Jules Perrot and Jean Corallis original ballet of 1841. The duo Rachel Beaujean and Ricardo Bustamante also base themselves on this original version but are adding new sections and bringing a new slant.
Rachel Beaujean, Head of Artistic Staff of the Dutch National Ballet, danced the role of Myrtha for many years in Sir Peter Wrights production of Giselle. And Ricardo Bustamante, former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, appeared in Giselle in the role of Albrecht, sharing the stage with dance legend Carla Fracci and working under the equally legendary Michail Baryshnikov as ballet master. Beaujean and Bustamante share the same passion for and concept of this masterpiece of classical romanticism.
The sets and costumes for this new production are by Toer van Schayk, who sets the ballet at the end of the eighteenth century, predating the time of the original premiere.
Van Schayk has designed the stage picture for many of the Dutch National Ballets most successful productions including Nutcracker & Mouse King and Romeo and Juliet.
