At 28, walking to a neighborhood bar (live music) in Houston, a group of cops were standing around kicking a prone person. This time I spoke up,"I'd say he's learned his lesson." It was enough to stop the beating & only cost me a few hours jail time. They went through the motions, but treated me w/respect. That's the difference between being a kid & being a man. They even let me go in the bar & have a drink first.

Late night encounter w/Louisiana State Troopers & watching them beat the hell out of two black kids that had given me a ride was one of the saddest experiences of my life. Knowing I couldn't do jack against 6 armed men (I was 17 in 1970) had me having to hide a rage like none I've had before or since. Saving grace was driving their girlfriends home when the cops left us there.
