As Hamid Karzai swears in members of his new cabinet, the Taliban take the opportunity to show their presence with a major bombing in downtown Kabul. International forces on the ground in Afghanistan would like to turn security operations over to the Afghan National Army, but as long as these attacks keep happening, that seems less and less likely.

the US will never get anywhere in Afghanistan unless they come to a deal with the Taliban. Problem is that they've demonised the Talibs so much since 2001 that any deal now looks like surrender. So the Yanks are trapped in a war they cant win, yet neither can they 'lose' in the sense of conventional defeat. They're trying to split the Taliban but this won't work as they now have the hearts & minds of their Pashtun brothers in Afgh & in certain parts of Pakistan.
