It's part spread, part pistol; also known as a hybrid. That's something any good offensive mind can do easily: mesh the good parts of different schemes together. In this case, running the play out of the pistol allows it to be theoretically run to either side.

well, it just depends on the play. if its a straight hand off or an option or a pitch he will be a lil farther behind. if its a counterstep hand off he will be closer

Dude you suck! You know nothing about football...In this video what is so special about the pistol. Wow its just like the spread except the RB/HB is behind the QB.

No meyer didnt invent the spread. Dan Mullen installed it at uf and it has got popular over the years. But Rich Rod did invent the spread + option + triple option, and look who started using it.....the gators....chomp chomp my ass

its slightly different from the shotgun because the quarterback doesnt line up as far back as a traditional shotgun, allowing the running back to, as you noted, to line up directly beind the Q.

as for it being stolen from Nevada, that much is true. yes its a simple speed option, but they stole the formation from Nevada. even though it wouldnt surprise me if someone had done it a little before, Nevada's hall of fame coach Chris Alt is credited with inventing the pistol

"Pistol" is a generic term just like "Shotgun" or "I". It just means that the quarterback is lined up to take a shotgun snap with the running back directly behind him instead of being offset to the side.

There's nothing new in football. It was just a simple speed option play.
