Up With Me was produced as a collaboration between seven "at-risk" teenagers from Harlem, New York, and a film crew. The film is premiering at SXSW film festival in March 2008. The teenagers who star in this movie are all non-professional actors -- many are underprivileged Harlem teenagers. For several months, we ran a writing workshop with the kids, basing some of the screenplay on their real lives. Then, they starred in the movie. When some of the teenagers were not acting in a particular scene, we taught them skills to work on the crew, operate B-camera, hold bounce boards, etc.
great work. i love seeing young people taking it upon themselves to tell a story like this. i would love to see the full film.
