I took this video while traveling in Afghanistan in 2005. This segment shows the time I spent in Badakshan learning about poppy cultivation, opium production and herion manufacturing.

  • who are you that you were allowed safely to travel here, what are your ties to these people? are you arab? where did u learn to speak arabic? you look jewish, do they hate jews there?

  • Generally, anti-semitism is not as prevalent as found in Arab countries. Afghans don't speak Arabic, they speak a variety of languages, but mostly Dari and Pashtu. Nothern Afghanistan is generally safe for travelers.

  • In your opionion, is Northern Afghanistan still safe for westerners to travel around now?

  • I've sent a reply to your question via your YouTube account.

  • that is truly awsome my man.... WHat made you wanna travel there? And how did you get around so safely? ifyou could send me a message, that would be great

  • @mdphd2050 poppies need cold weather to sprout. In Canada we sow in early spring and harvest in mid summer.

I THINK they sow in december and havrest in april-may

  • What time of year (month) do they plant the poppies? Additionally, what time of year do they harvest the opium and what is the daily average temperature? I have read that poppies are generally a cool weather crop, but I'm sure June in this part of the world is quite hot.

  • yeah, hold the fuckin paper in the way when you try to show us the flower....

  • the flower does not develop from the "crown". the petals of the flower grow from the "ring" under the latter pod. the flower blooms 24-48hrs then the small pod inside grows for about two weeks. after two weeks of maturing the pod is ready for opium-harvest. for seed-harvest the plant and pod has to be dry, which takes another month.
