OM Co-founder and Team Leader Joe Duff takes the Class of 2011 on a training flight over the White River Marsh in Green Lake County, WI on August 27th, 2011.
At this point the young Whooping cranes, now referred to as 'colts' are four months of age. Joe managed to get five colts to fly alongside his Cosmos ultralight-aircraft, while the remaining half of the Class were quite content to watch from the grass training strip, adjacent their predator proof enclosure.
Beginning in mid-October three Operation Migration ultralights will begin guiding the young cranes south - on their first-ever migration to Florida. After spending the winter at one of two National Wildlife Refuges on the Gulf coast, the cranes will initiate their own, un-assisted return migration to Wisconsin.
