The Box was a Canadian New Wave group from Montreal in the 1980s. A new lineup of the band was restarted in 2003.
The band was formed in 1981 by Jean-Marc Pisapia, an early member of Men Without Hats. He recruited guitarist Guy Florent and bassist Jean-Pierre Brie for the band, who were originally known as Checkpoint Charlie before settling on the name The Box.

The band's first single attracted the attention of Montreal radio station CKOI, leading to a deal with Alert Records. Also that year, Pisapia's brother Guy joined the band on keyboards.

Their debut album, The Box, was released in 1984 and produced the hit singles "Must I Always Remember" and "Walk Away". Drummer Sylvain Coutu joined the band for its supporting tour, but was replaced by Philippe Bernard before the band's next album. Florent also left the band, and was replaced by Claude Thibeault.

In 1985, The Box released All The Time, All The Time, All The Time. That album, which included backing vocals by Sass Jordan and Marie Carmen, produced the hit singles "My Dreams of You" and the band's most famous song, "L'Affaire Dumoutier (Say to Me)". The band won the 1985 Félix Award for group of the year, and were nominated for the Juno Award for most promising group.

1987's Closer Together was the band's most commercially successful album. Featuring the hit singles "Ordinary People", "Closer Together" and "Crying Out Loud for Love", the album was certified platinum. Backing vocals on the album were provided by Jordan and Martine St. Clair.

After touring for more than eighteen months, the band took six months off to recover before returning with 1990's The Pleasure and the Pain. That album was a commercial disappointment, and The Box disbanded in 1992 after releasing the greatest hits compilation A Decade of Box Music.

Pisapia released a solo album, John of Mark, in 1995. He subsequently revived The Box with a new lineup, releasing a new hits compilation, Always in Touch With You, in 2003. In 2005 the band released Black Dog There, its first new album in fifteen years.

The Box's tour bus was parked around the Université de Montréal's campus during the beginning of December 2006. Other regular sightings from March 2007 near original location of Cafe Campus. Their bus can also be seen regularly parked outside a home on Westmount's tony Summit Circle, next to the mountain lookout.

The Box is working on a new progressive album, which will be released in 2008. The Box played in Dartmouth Nova Scotia at Monte's on January 9, 2009. At the show Jean Marc said "the new album was finished last week and will be released this year. It is very progressive and contains 10 songs".

  • Just for the record, this is not an official Box video. In fact, there was never a video for that particular song.

  • @jeanmarcpisapia Alors aimes-tu le vidéo ou non? :P

  • Sounds like Marillion too !!

  • Still love this early prog synth. sound... A mix of jethro tull, the police and everything i love. I haven'th talked about Jean-Marc voice that sounds so great to me...

  • now thats a good tune.

  • @jeanmarcpisapia Thank you for coming to Nova Scotia last year!!! It was unexpected and very thrilling. I was at the Monte's show in Dartmouth. Thanks to that performance, I discovered Black Dog There, and soon after bought the CD and have listened to it over 100 times. The songwriting, vocals, instrumentation, moods, the WHOLE THING is superb. What a treat for the ears. Hope you will continue to appear live & record more. Your voice has only gotten BETTER

  • Holy crap, Jean-Marc is leaving comments... WOW.

I just wanted to say, I was at the 2009 performance in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia that is mentioned in the description for this video. I hadn't seen The Box since the PATP Tour in 1990, when they appeared at Acadia University - my first concert in my life, at age 18. Even though the band lineup was different, 20 years later I actually welled-up a little when the show started. It was pure magic. Continued...

  • I had gotten to the Monte's club very early, and yes - there was the Box bus sitting outside! Even as a 38 year old male, I had the anticipation of a weepy teenager. I had a few cigarettes outside, and JeanMarc arrived...stood there and talked to the manager and a few staff...for about 10 minutes...standing 5 feet in front of me. Awesome. The performace was spectacular that evening, JM's bandmates are spot on - authentic Box - and I was in heaven. The 'Black Dog There' stuff was stunning live

  • Super bon groupe ! super bonne tounne Bravo The Box XXXXXXXX

  • Hello ReStart,

Let me just say that I find videos at large to inhibit the possibility of seeing your own images in your head as suggested by the music and I always thought that was a problem, even in the days when I directed most of the Box videos. Unless of course you're dealing with an artist such as Marilyn Manson or Lady Gaga where visuals are everything. The exercise has never been more than a marketing trick to me...

    But hey! That's just me

And thanks for your interest in the song BTW!

    JM
