Russia's General Prosecutor's Office continues to interrogate representatives of the previous government over an alleged case ilof poisoning. Former president Viktor Yushchenko, the one-time hero of the Ukraine Orange Revolution, was invited to testify in the ongoing investigation. Our Ukraine bureau reports.
Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko was recently summoned to the Prosecutor General's Office to answers questions as a victim in the case of his poisoning in 2004.
After three-and-a-half hours of questioning, he revealed that there are new members in the investigation team.
The poisoning was assumed to have occurred during a dinner at the cottage of the former first deputy chairman of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vladimir Satsyuk.
Investigators say Yushchenko was poisoned on September 5, 2004, during his presidential campaign.
The Prosecutor General's Office had originally stated the poisoning was a proven fact.
However, the new leadership of the current Prosecutor General's Office has doubts about this and has asked the former Ukranian leader to submit to a new forensic examination.
[Viktor Yushchenko, Former Ukrainian President]:
"This examination has to be conducted in Ukrainian and international laboratories. Because when the Ukrainian side was holding the first examination, it seems 22 doctors said that there was no poisoning. And another expert committee, on the basis of conclusions from three international laboratories, said that there was poisoning."
In 2004, Austrian doctors identified the alleged poisoning agent as dioxin.
