  • @ronmac7609 Westerly Sanitary Corp was the Westerly Red Cross at that time, a division of the Red Cross, which was a national disaster and wartime relief service created in 1864. The first freestanding volunteer ambulance service was organized in Roanoke in 1921.

  • First defibrillator was demonstrated by Paul Zoll in 1956.

First mouth-to-mouth training occurred with Baltimore Fire under Peter Safer in 1958.

First CPR manikin was Resusci-Annie, from Asmund Laerdal in 1960.

The first out of hospital advanced ambulance service was in Belfast, Ireland, in 1966.

New York St. Vincents was second, after the White Paper was published, and was designed using the Belfast service as a model.

The first EKG was transmitted by Dr. Eugene Nagel, with Miami Fire, in 1967.

  • Some folks have asked for copies of this video. You can search for the Youtube Downloader to acquire a copy.

Some folks are also insisting on credit for "firsts," so I thought I would correct a few items:

The first hospital based ambulance service was Commercial (Cincinnati General) in 1865.

The first mandatory training program was in Toronto Canada, established in 1889.

The first volunteer ambulance service was established by Stan Wise in Roanoke in 1921.

  • @THFD I just started an EMS course @ the high school level. I told my instructor about some of your videos. She requested that I ask you to please email a copy of "History of Modern EMS", and any other EMS videos you think might benefit a high school EMS class to wolfec@wcde.org. Thank you for posting, -Kevin Lowe (David Crockett High School Health Sciences)

  • The Westerly Ambulance Corps in Rhode Island (initially known as Westerly Sanitary Corps) was established in 1917. That is a lot earlier than than 1928!
