This is my mommy’s music. I was raised hearing this kind of jazz in my house. And recently I was helping my mommy move some things and found a Ahmad Jamal record from the 1950s or early 1960. Makes me wish I had stayed with those piano lessons my mommy used to take me to.

Saw him live at the Blue Note in New York in 2005. He was backed by Idris Muhammed on drums and James Cammack on bass. Incredible set. Unfortunately I saw his second set of the night and he played Swahililand during the first set. He played Poinciana during the second, which is the sample for Stop Frontin' by KRS One.
