This video of my Vermont Castings Vigilant shows the flames are going straight up the flue with no smoke or sparks coming from the opening. The bypass damper was opened for about ten seconds before I opened the loading door, putting the stove into "updraft mode". The draft is pulling strongly, even with only a partially filled firebox burning.
You can see the fire pick up in intensity as fresh air hits the escaping hot wood gases. In "bypass mode" (damper closed), this would occur at the back of the stove in the secondary combustion chamber.
