Next to Roland's TR-808, the Oberheim DX and DMX are classic Hip-Hop drum machines. The Oberheim DX differed from the 808 in that it used actual drum samples rather than synthetic sounds. Released in 1984, the DX has found its way into too many tracks to mention in hip-hop, dance, rock, and pop music. The machine's bigger brother, the DMX, provided the moniker for old school producer Davy DMX (not to be confused with rapper DMX, who claims his acronym stands for "Dark Man X.")

If you're from the old school you know these sounds, and you love them.

  • How much would all this equipment cost?

  • You could probably get a DX for $200-400. The DMX is the same basically but with a superior snare drum.

For practical purposes though, you might as well get the DX/DMX samples off the net and use them in Reason or something, unless you love these old machines like me.

  • wow this is soo decent dude. i checked out ure homepage. the songs on there are craazzy nice. did u make all of em?

  • @dzlvs8 they are samples, but not the type of samples you're thinking about. they are recorded drums from actual drums and percussion. analog sounds are analog synthesis that can be shaped and mixed into different sounds (i.e. Simmons, Synare, Syndrum, Tr-808 606)

  • Ice-T's keyboard player is tapping on this thing onstage in Breakin' 2 during the "Go Off" song at the Radiotron. Was this what was actually used on the recording of that song is what I wonder.

  • hey the turntable is that working with pc?? i mean is it posible to find a turntable with usb ? for programms like reason ans so on?

  • wait, I thought these were analog drum machines? Are they??? I am starting to hear from some people that they are drum samples and not analog sounds. I am starting to rethink my recent ebay purchase of a DX!!!!

  • Damn i have to save $ 500 to buy a drumm machine, and yes i will get your advice to get an old because i like the old fashion.

  • omg worst hardware ever

  • jst going to buy one from junk shop for 55 euros :D

  • daaaaamn listen to how crisp that fucking hi-hat is

  • that was great!

  • i quite love these old machines. can't find any under 600$ now tho.
