Simple single light strobist technique using the Yong Nuo 560 flash for fill light. Step by step instructions and set up.

Off camera flash does not have to be complicated, here we are just using the flash for a little fill light against the strong day light sun.

Please subscribe -- Lots more hands on videos with this flash.

Gear used on this shoot was:
Nikon D5100
Gitzo GK2580 traveller tripod

  • Does the YN 560 work with Nikon Commander mode?

  • @pramodmeee it will only repeat - it cannot be controled by the nikon flash in terms of power etc.

  • Hi Matt and thanks for all your videos. I have a question. In general when you shoot outdoors and setup fill flash, do you keep the exposure below 1/250sec (with help of ND filers for example). Or do you make use of the Auto-FP feature and shoot with higher sync-speeds? And related to this; does the pocketwizard system support the CLS or hi-speed sync modes?

  • @TubbeAh the TT do support hi speed - but I usually stay to 1/250

  • Its a good thing to invest in a light meter unless you are going on a trial and error basis. It takes longer that way.

  • @thatnikonguy So YN560 will fire with commander mode in camera and I don't need a pocket wizard?? Do you think it is a good alternative to Nikon speed lights?

    Thaks Mat.

  • Jen makes every shot look awesome..its hard shooting out there without any modifiers ey Matt......

  • @sh1ftgear without TTL you either have to claculate the amount of light the flash gun spits out using the guide-number or just try different power levels and see which is the right one. the later seems to work better at least for me since it usually takes less than a minute to have it right since you just look at the back of your camera and check exposure, when shooting film i would advice you to buy a light meter and use it to meter the light on the subject.

  • Very helpful Thanks

  • I have a YN560 also, i love it. Obviously it takes some knowledge with settings since its full manual. But once you get the hang of the settings then it actually becomes pretty simple. I am going to be getting into a Canon flash soon but I will keep the YN560 and get another for some strobist work.
