Former University of Michigan head football coach Lloyd Carr discusses what it takes to succeed in a job search and in life with young Detroit men participating in Goodwill's Flip the Script program.
In January, nearly 90 young men from Detroit took the first step toward becoming employed and productive members of the community when Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroits Flip the Script program welcomed its 21st class of students. All are young men ages 16 to 30 from Detroit and elsewhere in Wayne County who want to earn jobs and positively change their lives.
Those interested in enrolling in the program may call (313) 557-4821 for more information.
Participants in the 16-week individual transformation and career development program receive personal, social, spiritual and academic training to foster healthy personal development. They also take courses to enhance both soft and hard skills and receive employment placement assistance.
Flip the Script was created to engage Detroits young men in learning how to overcome devastating socio-economic circumstances and reconstruct their lives. Since its inception in 2003, more than 80 percent of Flip the Script graduates have engaged in meaningful career opportunities. Many find employment in construction, various building trades and related careers.
Flip the Script participants often come from backgrounds that include addiction or abuse, dropping out of school, periods of homelessness, or trouble with the law.
We want the young men of Detroit to know that regardless of how low they might think they are on the social ladder, they are capable of earning employment, contributing to society and becoming strong heads of their families, said Lorna G. Utley, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit. Our Flip the Script program helps them realize their potential to become economically self-sufficient and instills the desire to change the direction of their lives.
In just the past two years, Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit has helped more than 2,000 people in Metro Detroit find a job through its employment training and support programs and has provided career assistance to thousands more throughout the region.
