sassy is the newest member of the household, she is a two yearold mixed breed.
UPDATE:
unfortunatly sassy had to be euthanised, she turned out to be a jekyll/hyde dog. one minute she was ok, the next she was agressive.
when we had brought her home she was a sweet little dog, very calm most of the time and just lounged around sleeping. she even seemed to get along with the cats, just walking up to them and sniffing before walking away. the next day, almost exactly 24 hours later, she became very agressive and exciteable. she tried to bite me a few times when i was trying to pat her, she snaped at and eventually bit my husband when he put his hand down to pat her on the head, and she completly traumatised the cats. checkers found a hiding place and would not come out for 3-4 hours(which is quite dangerous for him with his history of bladder crystals, if he dont get enough water he could block and die of kidney faluire). we were given her travel crate by her previous owners, and i managed to get her in. once in there she would lunge the door trying to get out at the cats as they walked by, and growled at my husband every time he walked by or looked in. we had to secure the door with large C clamps to make the door stronger. when she was alone with me outside she seemed to be calmer, so long as i did not try to touch her, which was quite the change from the previous day when she would let me stroke her ears and even roll onto her back in submission to let me rub her belly.(my two videos of her were taken on the first day).
i called animal control to see what to do about her, as they are suposed to handle agressive dog cases, they told me that sassy was my problem to deal with, and claimed that they do not handle cases where the dog is owned by someone. this is very funny to me becuse animal control has been known to take peoples dogs right out of thier homes, it is well documented in the news here. i bet that if i had said that sassy was pitbull insted of a suspected sheltie corgi mix they would have come right away for her. it is sad that pitbulls are discriminated against, all the pits i have known so far in my life were very good dogs, i even owned a pitbul sheltie mix a few years ago who was very sweet, even after coming from a home that abused him and abandoned him tied to a table leg when they left on vacation.
we took sassy to the vet we had my dog tazz euthanised a few years ago, which i learned after calling all of the vet offices in HRM within driving distance, is the only vetrinary hospital that will euthanise a animal who does not have a life threatoning helath condition. the vet we spoke to said that she suspected that sassy had been sedated by the previous owners prior to us meeting her(she said she sees alot of that going on becuse the drugs are so widely avalible over the counter) or that there was a serious mental health problem making her unstable. all i know is that sassy had took on a complelty differnt personality then when we brought her home. the vet said that we were doing the right thing for her, as with her history of agression and biting, even with rehabilitation she would never be able to be trusted alone with other animals or with children, and unfortunatly there are not alot of people who are willing to take in a problem dog and rehabilitate them, it takes alot of time and money(iam very good with training animals, but i know my limitations). if we did not have her euthanised, she could have ended up in a shelter(and euthanised there when she failed their testing for adoption) or she could have ended up in home where the people were not as kind as we were to have her put down in a humane way.
i stayed with her as she sliped into the other side, and tried to communicate to her what was going on. she had to be muzled and held down for the injection to be administered and until she passed out, she didnt seem to be used to being touched or held.
the poor little girl did not know how to cope when she was given the love and care that one is suposed to give thier animals.
we brought her home and i gave her a burrial just like i would have given any of my other pets. even though i only knew her for three days, she deserved to be treated just like any one of my other animals.

oh my gosh thats terrible im so sorry. We got a husky, beautiful dog, recently and we had to give her back because she was supposed to be my brother's dog but he couldnt handle the responsibilit she required. In addition to that, my brother is allergic to dogs. We were devistated at the first idea of ever letting her go and when it actually happened i couldnt deal with the pain so i think about how she's going to be in a happier home and that makes me feel better. i still miss her so much though

poor thing. you could've asked for professional opinion and do a thorough helth check up before you took her to the vet who kills healthy animals. no excuse.
