After listening to this 8 times trying to learn the relationship of the bass to the harmony to the melody it seems to me that you really want to be singing the melody b/c you try to play the melody like michael sang it. You should sit down and just sing it, don't worry about not being michael, be you. Then add the bass back in cuz your voice will be doing the melody. Bach first wrote that if you run out of fingers and feet then sing a line. The voice is the principal instrument.

This is great b/c so much attention is given to the bass line and the J5 has so much more in their music than just funky bass (which they did brilliantly - a great bass line is always a crowd please) but in the rhythm section of those chords in the middle they encoded the the emotional content of the feeling of expression (the gitiness, uncertainty, anxiety of living life without something you've come to want).  The melody being the outward verbal expression of protest, outcry or revallry.
