Garratt number 87 crossing the Cambrian Railway at Cae Pawb on Monday 23rd March 2009 on the Welsh Highland Railway / Rheilffordd Eryri, as part of the stock movement from Porthmadog to Dinas.

This is the first crossing of the Cambrian Line by a narrow gauge steam locomotive for over 70 years.

I captured a few videos + photos of no. 87 on the Monday, which was a nice relaxing day after a busy weekend working with the WHR track gang (ROTWG).

Sorry about the poor video quality - the weather was gradually deteriorating, plus I'm just using a regular digital camera - but I hope this is of some interest to some people!

  • were they taking her over to the festinioug ?

  • @CGiordano464 Hi Charlie, sorry I have only just noticed your question. To answer: no, it was the other way round, they were taking Number 87 from the Ffestiniog over to the Welsh Highland using the CTRL (Cross Town Rail Link). As an update: 87 is now dark blue (no longer grey), and the Welsh Highland link to the Ffestiniog at Harbour Station in Porthmadog is now commissioned and in use: the first public through trains start in mid February.

  • Ok I admit, the Garratt is one of THE most awkward trains I have ever seen...

  • @WelshK9 u europenas r lucky! I need to take a trip over there. Not much NG action happening here in Southern California haha

  • @paulhepworth Trespassers? I know you train buffs think that you own Porthmadog but you bloody well dont!!

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • Noted Roger. When I worked in the industry the rule was to wear hi-vis when on or near the line, whether in a red or green zone. We could only avoid this if using a public level crossing as a pedestrian.

  • No... No... No.87's Fireman and a Travelling Fitter - and I'm the one in the baseball cap

    ;¬D

  • Two persons clearly visible on NR infrastructure who were not wearing hi vis clothing. Were they trespassers? Look like father/son.
