Mick is a Lecturer in Social Work at the Open University. He has worked mainly in the field of adult care, predominantly mental health, learning disability and substance misuse since he began practicing as a social worker in 1986. Following nearly 20 years as a social work practitioner and manager, Mick joined The Open University in 2004 as part of the Social Work Degree Programme.

On joining The Open University, he was part of the production team for K113 Foundations for Social Work Practice first level practice learning course for the BA (Hons) in Social Work. He has been course team chair for K113 since it went into presentation in 2006. K113 production and presentation course team members received a teaching award from the Practice-based Professional Learning Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in 2007.

Mick is also chair of K272 Challenging Ideas in Mental Health - a Level 2 course which is an option courses in the Degree in Social Work, the BA/BSc (Hons) Health Studies and form part of the Pre-Registration Nursing Programme (Mental Health branch). K272 is also an option course on the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care.

Has worked in partnership with Peking School of Distance Learning when it began translating K257 (Mental Health and Distress) for presentation to its students in 2007. The formal agreement between the two institutions is covered by a Licensing Agreement allowing license of K257 from the Open University curriculum and adaptation and/or translation to suit local requirements subject to Open University approval. The students work within local programmes of study and are awarded local qualifications. I worked closely with Peking School of Distance Learning to consider the adaptation and translation work required. In its first presentation in China, this course attracted 1800 students.
