The Colo River, near Sydney, has recently experienced massive flooding, which is captured here on video. The Colo rose 6-m in 24-hrs, stranding livestock, flooding farms, bridges, and machinery.

(See http://www.youtube.com/user/hashticles?feature=mhum#g/c/FD4140CEDDF52508 to witness the rescue of a horse, stranded in floodwaters, by canoeists.)

This river is popular with Sydney-siders and tourists because of its beauty and proximity to Sydney. However, it can become very dangerous and thus its behaviour must be understood.

If ever you're thinking of going to the Colo to canoe, lilo, or swim in the Colo River, NSW, Australia? Know the river levels. Check the level at http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDN60143.html#Colo_River

Keep in mind that the gorge section of the Colo (upstream of where this footage was shot) is VERY different to the sections near Upper Colo.

  • Most rivers spend 95 - 99% of the time at base flow. But base flow is no indication of what the river is like during flood which can often exceed imagination. The Colo at 10-m is utterly mind blowing.

  • This bridge has survived many floods, due to its robust design--you'll see similar bridges all round Australia.

  • The Colo Gorge is upstream of Upper Colo. Downstream of Upper Colo the Gorge widens into a broader valley, and the river changes its characteristics, accordingly. Check maps and/or Google Earth to see what I mean.
