Today, 11th February marks 26 years since Eleanor Powell passed away. My little homage is a lovely scene with Ellie dancing in Central Park, New York, accompanied by a very young James Stewart...... singing! Eleanor Powell's voice was dubbed for this scene so the annoying high pitched voice you hear is not Eleanor's. (She had a warm and sweet voice, don't know why the studios didn't let her sing in films, incredible because her voice was kept for every film soundtrack recording, and they show it was a good voice).

  • 99 years today since the birth of Eleanor Powell. Thanks Eleanor for all the exhilarating happiness you provided the world with your craft.

  • Who is the 'singer'? (James Steward?)

  • Yes, it was his real voice. Also, this is the first and ONLY film where he was required to dance. He did a couple of routines :)

  • @dannybex No worries. I'm always glad to see Hollywood urban myths revealed.

  • Slightly misleading title...

This wasn't filmed in Central Park, New York...it was filmed on a soundstage in Culver City to resemble Central Park.

  • @problem49 Sorry, but Reynolds and Hagen's voice was dubbed by Betty Noyes in Singin in the Rain.

  • The classic version of this practice is "Singin' In The Rain", wherin the singing voice of Jean Hagen is supposedly dubbed by Debbie Reynolds, but in truth Jean dubbed for Debbie!

  • As an actress, EP is a wonderful dancer. ;o)

That said, the business of studio bosses sticking their noses into the creative process is odious; I think the did so just because they could. EP and Rita both had lovely voices and I, for one, would prefer to hear them singing.

  • Great Cole Porter musical.

  • it's Born to Dance.

  • what movie is this? i'd really like to see it.

  • This Lady Could Dance.

Thank you for the wonderful listing.
