The poem I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou is a metaphor of struggle of the African American race for freedom and equality amongst white Americans. The caged bird is simply at a disadvantage because it is caged, and the free bird does not understand what it is like to be "caged." Despite our skin color, however, we all know what it feels like to be at a simple disadvantage and to be denied opportunities in life.
