Laker Algoma Transfer viewed on a bike ride (Oct 27) west of Houghton, Michigan, on Keweenaw Waterway along Canal Rd. unloading 7,500 tons of salt at Hancock Michigan, (added to the 18,000 tons delivered by the laker Algosoo), Algoma Transfer is 650' long, cargo capacity almost 16,000 tons, 6,100 hp engine, This boat was actually made up from parts of older boats in 1998: Fore Section: J.H. Hillman Jr, (1943 - 1974); Stern Section: Cabot (1965 - 1983) This ship is an example of a real "Laker" where the Los Angeles Lakers got their name.
