he didnt kill her because she said no to marrying to him. Tom Dula(his real name) had many girl friends and agreed to run away from all them and run away with her when she asked him. She packed her stuff and started to run away with her and the reason he killed her is still unknown he never gave a reason why he did it

I'm not sure this has been mentioned, but Michael Landon (of Bonanza and Little House fame) starred in a black and white movie called the legend of Tom Dooley, He played Tom Dooley and was hanged just like in the song. This has always been such a gentle yet eerie and sad song.

This is true, but the Trio reportedly hated the flic, due to its' being a typical Hollywood whitewash. The real story is pretty nasty. Dooley had plenty to be steamed about.

I was 6 years old when my father came home with this record. He only used the phonograph (blond wood with a gold grille!) on weekends. Mom would be cooking dinner, they'd have a couple of drinks, and music like this played in the living room. Nice memories.
