A properly sized and placed rear-facing step near the leading edge of a wing can significantly boost performance. This is documented at http://www.deturbulator.org/Progress-091810-LET-Performance.asp and http://www.deturbulator.org/Progress-03192011-15Cheap.asp. This clip shows a crude 2D Navier-Stokes demonstration that may explain how this occurs.
Caveat: This is not a proper CFD simulation! It is only a crude demonstration. No attempt has been made to replicate the actual conditions. It remains for the serious work to be done by professionals.
