All Saints Day, November 1, 2009 Psalm 124 vs. 1-10 Sung by April Walling, Julia Soper, David Bowen, Chris Zaleski, accompanied by Jordan Williams at Grace Episcopal Church, Weslaco TX
beautiful in every way, one small suggestion, this plain chant is from Psalm 24. I really love all your singing, and played it over and over. It is so much like my own church's service.
Admirable rendition of the Goodson chant & prob not easy for 4 solitary voices But the problem is 1) for this quartet it should be transposed to Bflat - more comfortable range for these particular voices; 2) MOST IMPORTANTLY, this is way too slow as to be unbearable! Anglican chant is mere good reading aloud; natural speech rhythms are essential whether singing or saying the psalms. If one were to speak this psalm naturally, it'd take way under 3mins 30sec. Don't be a slave 2 the musical meter.
@celtusguy "Oh and by the way", yes it is - completely - by the way except to demean someone whose opinion is different to yours. We are not here to discuss spelling anymore than "by the way" neither Shakespeare nor many of the greatest names in English literature were less concerned about how they spelled than grammar - something contemporary English/American culture has totally reversed. My point is still the same. You are at home where you are; leave others alone, and live and let live.
@organisten just for your information if you regard Palestrina, Tallis, Byrd et al trendy, then I guess I must be! I sing in a church choir where we sing Mass settings, Anthems and Motets by such composers together with Plainsong and Anglican Chant and we sing the Chant as a song of praise, not as a tedious Dirge....oh by the way....ple(a)nty as not got a A in it!.....SO, go back to sleep with your tedious and dreary way of singing!
@celtusguy go away. There are PLEANTY of "modern" churches where you will find yourself at home. This used to be typical of church until the more "trendy" took over. Well now this is very much the minority. No one is forcing you to be here, so you go back to your trendy worship songs or what ever you like - and leave those of us who prefer tradition alone, preferably without your perjoratives. Live and let live!
Congregations generally do not join in the singing of psalms. Historically - I may be wrong - they are the province of the choir as they need much practice: especially the Anglican non-metrical form. Psalms sometimes come off as tedious as it is essentially a repetition. It is not a canticle. Given the size of this choir, I think they made the best of what they have.
Certainly not tedious and dreary, but it's a shame it's not being sung by the entire congregation - it's a simple chant and would sound better that way IMO.

I think that it's delicate, refined, reverential, transcendent, worshipful, beautiful, but I consider "praise music" to be tedious and banal.
