The MC compilers are essentially free. They run in full mode for the trial period and then only optimizations are turned off after.

MC could offer a low-cost BASIC compiler (about 30 dollars), and save their forum from 90% trivial questions.
I just had two heavy IBM ringbooks for interpreted BASIC (guess price 1000s dollars). back then language usage was different.
MC is doing a good job offering MPLAB IDE.

I wouldn't exactly call the development tools "low cost". Atmel has you guys beat hands down in that department.
