Precious and impressive BBC documentary on (the making of) the 1991 Liverpool Oratorio, the collaboration between McCartney and Carl Davies. After the 'Yesterdays' and 'Eleanor Rigbies' of decades before, this is Macca's first full blown attempt at classical music.
McCartney finds himself co-operating with choirs (both school boys and adults), the violinist and leading singers such as Sally Burgess,
Kiri te Kanawa, Jerry Hadley and Willard Budd. He takes Davies on a Liverpool trip down memory lane
The highlights are frequent but McCartney's instant composing ('Kept in confusion...') at the piano (part 4) and the motherly tears of wife Linda (part 12) when she hears Dame te Kanawa singing (the beautiful birth song) 'The world you're coming into', stand out!
(McCartney's and George Harrison's) School motto: 'Not for ourselves but for the whole world were you born'
I take it that the little fella running through the halls of the Institute is sort of supposed to be Paul as a kid... Kind of looks like Paul when he was a kid, anyway. Nice depiction, really places you in there!
