"America" was composed with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical version of "West Side Story". The scene in which the song is used is dominated by the character (Anita) played by Rita Moreno in this recording from the 1961 film version directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins.

One of the very few (and very first) performers to win an Oscar, an Emmy, a Tony, and a Grammy, Moreno was born 1931 in Puerto Rico. She's only 5' 2 1/2" tall. Seems so much taller in West Side Story (1961).
