The Little Boy
MACHINE by Aaron Kramer
In the shadow of the Eiffel tower an old toy maker napped at his workbench. He dreamed his puppets came to life and danced just for him. His little ballerina was as elegant as a swan. Her arms and legs fluttered like leave in a breeze. At the end of her performance she curtsied and sank to the bench. She lay still and the sad old man was alone again. The next morning he awoke with an idea. "What if I made a little boy machine. Then I would have somebody to love as my very own and share my life with." So he set to work. He began by carving a single arm from a piece of wood. Next he gave him a shoulder an elbow and a wrist. The little boy had a nice round head and body made from an old sock darning egg. His two deep yellow cat eyes and his long blue nose made the toy maker giggle and laugh. He only had one arm because his maker was busy carving him a perfect green heart. It was placed on his chest for all to see the love inside. Then the toy maker began drawing the complex machine that would bring his creation to life. With metal and fire he made a machine so intricate that it just had to be alive. When he finished he turned the handle. The crankshaft engaged the linkages which sparked his little hand to life. His outstretched finger pointed at his own head. As the gears whirred he traced a circle around his ear and smiled a silly smile. The toy maker's smile faded into a frown. He put his hands over his eyes and felt that even his own creation thought he was crazy. He covered the little boy machine and laid his head down on his bench as the sun set behind the Eiffel tower. Suddenly the sheet began to stir. He pulled it back and stared in amazement as the little boy machine pointed at his head then shoulder, knees and toes. Again he pointed at his "head" and "shoulders", "knees" and "toes". His little mouth started to sing. "Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes. Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes. And eyes and ears and mouth and nose, head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes." The old man was delighted and hugged the little boy machine. The little boy smiled warmly and pointed at his perfect green heart. "Thank you Papa. I love you."
The toy maker was smiling as he awoke. Groggily he looked out the window as the new day's sun bathed the Eiffel tower in a golden light He looked down at the unfinished little boy machine in front of him and he set to work.
