In order to experience the McGurk effect, watch the movie with eyes open and
eyes closed. The movie consists of an incongruent auditory-visual pair of
syllables. The auditory track contains the syllable "pa" (verify this by listening to
the movie with eyes closed). The video track contains the syllable "ka" (verify by
watching the movie with the sound muted). When the auditory and video tracks
are seen and heard together, most subjects report hearing "ta" or something
similar (as opposed to either of the component syllables, "pa" or "ka"). The
following file is a .MOV file that can be played with the Apple QuickTime viewer.
This viewer is pre-installed on all Apple computers and is available for many
other computers as a free download from
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ Another alternative for viewing this
file is the VLC media player, a free download from http://www.videolan.org/ This
movie was created in FinalCut Express under Mac OSX using MPEG-4 video
compression at medium quality (bitrate 6400 kB/sec).
