We were going to use Shake, but we didn't have enough time. We just used the animation and cropping tools in Final Cut to do the effect.

We actually just used good ole' FCP. We tried it in Shake, and it would have certainly looked great, but our editor was having some troubles and it would have taken much longer than a few simple layers and keyframes.
And yes, it is the official Engadget commercial after winning the competition. No word on the uses, nor the whereabouts of the prize laptop.
