@snakebagel2 No, it's Duffy's! Just kidding. As you say, not that it matters but the first to record the song were W.C. Fields Memorial Electric String Band, a relatively obscure band from Redondo Beach. In fact it was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, the songwriters/producers behind almost all Monkees' hits (they also had their own band, The Candy Store Prophets). Rock'n'roll is popular music so we can consider it collective cultural heritage, no matter who wrote it or played it.
